So tomorrow is ANZAC day in Australia. Anzac day for anyone who doesn’t know, is a day in Australia where we honor our soldiers (known as Anzacs) and the sacrifices they made to give us our freedom and also celebrate Australia coming together and proving itself on the world stage. It is now an excuse for all Australia’s to either drink copious amounts tonight or tomorrow whilst playing two up. (the only day where it’s legal) I myself will be committing the former. Whilst I have to admit, it feels a little bit tacky to hit the town tonight for some drinks and dancing on a day to remember people who died for me. I’m not entirely sure why I am feeling guilt over this, when I never have before. I guess I will just have to remember to be grateful that I get to dance all night or any night I choose, because of their sacrifice.
Lest We Forget

“Anzac day for anyone who doesn’t know, is a day in Australia where we honor our soldiers (known as Anzacs) and the sacrifices they made to give us our freedom.” – I’m sorry, but I wasn’t aware Australia’s freedom had ever been in jeopardy, can u illuminate me a bit more on this, some links perhaps? Thank you.
well just briefly
Australia was involved in World War One through our commitments to England, our motherland. When they were at war, we were at war as well. What would have happened to Australia’s freedom had the english not won is debatably and can only ever be speculated, but at the time and even debately know, it is believed that australia would not be the place it is today.
And World War two, the north of australia was attacked by Japan and Japan wanted to inflitrate Australia for its resources.
Australia soliders have also been heavily sent and conscripted in WWI, WW2 and the Vietnam War. Whilst they probably don’t seem to affect Australia directly, our allies have been and we have been involved just to keep those ties for protection.
Thank you, very insightful information. It seems to me, Australia has gotten involved into wars (except Japan’s occupation) due to it’s allies, and not so much to protect itself from Germany and so on. One thing I’m sure off, Australia never needed England not England’s protection since as a country England itself made Australia a penal colony to get rid of the “undesirables”. I love Australia for what it is today, and it’s amazing how it all started. Once again, thank for the info, much appreciated and have fun celebrating today.
Yeh, definately we are involved as Allies, but at the same time, if Germany had won, Australia would become there colony and we don’t know what that would have meant for us. Maybe nothing would have changed, or maybe Australia could be very different. Thats at least what was feared when we became involved.
But yes, England was using us and putting our men on the frontlines in World War one as some of the first to be killed. Australia is pretty amazing. It’s not a bad story, a land full of convicts.
Indeed it’s a success story considering it’s beginnings. One thing you have to work on is being more open minded towards other races. I’ve heard and read quite a few in this regard. Not judging though, so hope you’re not offended. Luc
We have had some bad press in this department in recent years. But Australia is one of the most multi-cultural countries in the world, though we are not perfect. It’s a shame that a few bad eggs give us a bad name, when the majority of us aren’t like that and are very open minded towards other cultures. No not offended. It’s actually interesting(and sad) to hear how we are viewed.
I have an Aussie friend and i have to say she’s probably one of the most loyal, forgiving and spiritually pure and beautiful people I know. She lives in Melbourne – her house was even used in a few early episodes of Neighbours LOL
My cousins live out in Oz too. I know the Aussies call us Poms but that’s okay
And, alas, there are stereotypes everywhere.
Wow her house is famous! That’s pretty cool.
Yeah I’m pretty proud to be an Aussie. Yeah we call you Pom’s, but its only ever to stir you up, we can be shit stirrers but we don’t mean anything by it.
But your point about stereotypes is an excellent one. There are stereotypes everyone and whilst these stereotypes do have some small truths at times, they definately aren’t true for the greatest majority. It’s sad when whole countries get back reputations from the unsupported acts of a few. But it was interesting to hear the opinions above, because I honestly had no idea that Australia had that stereotype. It was interesting to know.
